Encouragements from Peter

The letter of 1 Peter is addressed to ‘God’s elect, strangers in the world …’

These were scattered believers who were suffering opposition because of their faith in Christ.

How does Peter encourage such believers? (v3-5)

Peter starts with God.  He reminds them of their salvation through Jesus Christ.  He reminds them – and us, of the reasons we should praise our God.

He has given us new birth
He has given us a living hope through Christ
He has given us an eternal inheritance than can never perish, spoil or fade
We are shielded by His power

He reminds us that our salvation is complete
  • In the past we were given new birth
  • In the present we are shielded by His power
  • In the future we have a glorious inheritance
He focuses our hearts and minds on Jesus Christ (v7- 9)
  • Jesus is the one in whom we believe
  • Jesus is the one who will receive praise, honour and glory when our faith – even though refined by fire – proves to be genuine
  • Jesus is the one we love
  • Through Jesus we are filled with an ‘inexpressible and glorious joy’
  • Through Jesus we are participants of this glorious salvation – now and in the future

In the light of these salvation blessings, Peter tells us how we should live. We should:

Prepare your minds for action (v13)

Be diligent, make sure nothing hinders your walk with God.

Be self-controlled ...

Be disciplined in the way you live and in the way you think.

Set your hope fully on the grace given you when Jesus Christ is revealed ...

Live in the light of Christ's return. Look forward with confident expectation to the blessings you will receive when He comes again.

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you once had (v14) ...

Be obedient. Be like your Father. Model your behaviour on the holiness of God.

‘But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."' 1 v 15-16
