Give and take ...

Job lost his wealth, his property and his children:

"At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved is head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said:
Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised."
Job 1:20-22

I am reading through Job again. The first chapter is still as startling as ever it was. It re-inforces the fact that God is in control over all things, even Satan.

It was God who allowed these things happen to Job.

It is very easy for us to slip into a wrong attitude - that we are the ones who are in control.

  • We have money and money makes things happen - it gives us power and control.
  • We often achieve our dreams and aspirations seemingly by our own hard work and effort.

Whatever our position in life is - butcher, baker, candlestick maker or any point in between, it's easy for us to think that we are in control, that we get what we want or we deserve.

All this reminds me of my Mother-in-law. I noticed that she would sit in church, or at home with the palms of her hands open and up - as if she was waiting to catch something. It was clearly deliberate so after some time I asked her about it. She told me that it helped her to remember that whatever the Lord gave, she should be grateful for. She recognized that every blessing was from the Lord's hand and should be received, or given up, with a grateful heart.

The Lord gives,
but the Lord also takes away.

We are happy to receive blessings from the Lord's hands ...

... are we just as ready for Him to take them?

The God of all the earth, our heavenly father, is really the one who is in control. He is the one who gives and takes away.

  • We are His children - sinners saved by grace,
  • we are in His hands,
  • He knows what is best for us ...
  • ... and He knows the best timing for everything.

We should hold on to this truth …

... that our loving Father, the sovereign God - is the one in control.

May we be able to say with Job:

"The Lord gave
The Lord has taken away:
May the name of the Lord be praised."
