New Year

The New Year was not a unique event – it was celebrated 24 times, hourly!  rotating earth

  • We want our New Year to mean something.
  • We want it to be memorable.
  • We like the idea of a new year being a new start.

In the book of Exodus, God made a connection between the New Year and something memorable.

The New Year that was announced in the book of Exodus, marked a new beginning. God’s promise of a great deliverance which took place 14 days later: - this was the Passover, which began the Exodus1.

Each New Year was to be a reminder of God's great rescue

  • It was a rescue from slavery
  • It was a costly rescue which involved the sacrifice of a life
  • The sacrifice was to be without defect.
  • Only a perfect sacrifice was sufficient to protect against the destroying angel.

That sacrifice pointed forward to Jesus as the only sacrifice for sin - the only one who can atone for your sin and my sin. The passover animal pointed forward to the one true sacrifice which God accepts, Jesus - God’s own son.

The New Year is a time for you to remember that you too have been rescued from the slavery of sin. Christians have an exodus to remember.

Israel's rescue was an event that was to be forever fixed in their memory – it was to be a lasting memorial. They were always to remember God’s rescue from slavery – so that they would never want to return to it.

So it is with you – your rescue from the slavery of sin should be forever fixed in your memory as a lasting memorial. You should always remember God's rescue from slavery - so that you never want to turn back to your life of sin.

How does a rescued person respond to their rescuer?

  • With gratitude – telling others about the one who saved them.
  • You are to remember the cost of this rescue – blood had to be shed so that rescue could be accomplished.

Do you:happy new year

  • live every day thankful for God’s forgiveness and salvation?
  • Do you often remember the time when God rescued you from your sin?
  • When people ask, are you always ready to give a reason for the Christian hope that is in you?

Christians are living memorials to God’s saving grace.

New Year is a reminder that "God has rescued his people"
What difference will that make to you and how you live for God this coming year?

1Exodus chapter 12: God says that the New Year marks the people's deliverance from slavery
